I bought this t-shirt at Opening Ceremony in 2008. It was really trendy back then to cut everything you owned and turn it into something new. It was bad, people. I slashed my tights from top to bottom and thought I looked so cool. This t-shirt is a victim of that era and its trends, and although I now regret that it doesn’t have the ribbed crew neck it used to, I still love it so much. It’s perfectly oversize. It’s the softest cotton. It almost looks like Peter Saville’s album artwork for Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures, which defined 2008 for me. And it says “Joy of Gonz”—my last name is González. “Gonz” does not refer to me, obviously, but rather to—I think—skater Mark Gonzales, though I might be wrong. It’s been 11 years and no t-shirt has stolen my heart in such a way. I haven’t seen Marie Kondo’s Netflix series or read her book, but there’s enough of it around social media for me to know the essence of her method. This t-shirt? You bet your rolled up panties it sparks joy for me! What about you guys? What’s your favorite t-shirt that you still wear and would never part ways with?
